Recent NSF Award to School of Science and School of Medicine Faculty Permits the
Acquisition of Additional Mass Spectrometers
The Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology, in collaboration with faculty from the
Department of Biology and faculty from the IU School of Medicine, has received a
$479,590 NSF grant to purchase state-of- the-art mass spectrometers. Two instruments, an
Agilent 6520 Q-TOF (quadrupole time-of-flight) and sensitivity-enhanced 6410 triple
quadrupole spectrometers will have great versatility in exploratory qualitative and
high-sensitivity quantitative lipidomic, metabolomic, and proteomic analyses. Two
chromatography packages will allow the sensitive, rapid resolution of analytes. The PI
on the grant, Prof. Robert Minto notes that, together with a 500-MHz NMR spectrometer
acquired through NSF funding in 2006, the modernized analytical capabilities in the
department for synthetic and biomolecules greatly expands the potential for in-house and
collaborative research, as well as educational opportunities for IUPUI and local
Indianapolis Public School students.
Dr. Karl Dria, a C&CB research scientist, is
coordinating the installation and routine operation of the instrument, which is expected
to be installed and operational during January 2009.
